Cork Street
About the Project
Deconstruct UK Ltd were successfully awarded the demolition, façade retention and piling mat contract at Phase 1 & 2 of the Cork Street and New Bond Street Project for Pollen Estate.
The Project located in the heart of the West End spans from Cork Street, through to New Bond Street posing various challenges in the management of pedestrians and traffic throughout our duration on site.
Installation of 80 tonnes of temporary façade supports to the Cork Street elevation enabled the wholesale demolition of the 7 storey structure behind the Grade II listed façade. Waste arising from the demolition process was crushed on site to provide graded material for the follow on piling works.
The works were successfully completed without complaint from surrounding neighbours and stakeholders.
Project Challenges
Throughout the duration of the Cork Street Project, the surrounding road network was particularly congested. Two other large developments were taking place at the end of Cork Street and directly opposite requiring significant coordination between all contracting parties to ensure the flow of both construction and everyday traffic. The Westminster Road Licensing team were engaged to provide the necessary dispensations to allow all Projects to operate at maximum efficiency. Holding areas were introduced to allow the strategic stacking of vehicles and provide a seamless logistical service.
Overnight shifts were necessary to install the temporary façade steelwork. Shift teams worked from 6pm until 1am over a 3 week period in order to safely erect the temporary framework away from the bustling daytime pedestrian traffic, typical of West End London.
