About the Project
Deconstruct UK Ltd were appointed by the Crown Estate to undertake the Demolition of Dukes Court located on the corner of Jermyn Street and Duke Street St. James in the Heart of the West End. The Project involved Asbestos removal, Soft Strip and Wholesale demolition of the building including basement structure. There were a number of party wall interfaces during the works, some of which required temporary works installation to facilitate the separation of the buildings and tying of external brickwork to the adjoining buildings structures. Key to the success of the Project was the innovative use of a modified demolition excavator. Modifications were made to the excavator to reduce its weight and attach a mechanical pulveriser. This allowed use of the machine on the floor slabs with minimal back propping and for the majority of demolition works to be carried out without the requirement for percussive breaking allowing increased efficiencies on the job.
The key challenge faced on this scheme was the location of the building. Situated along Jermyn Street there were a variety of stakeholders including The Cavendish Hotel, High End retailers and Commercial office buildings. Deconstruct worked hand in hand with The Crown Estates resident Liaison Officer to ensure the demolition works were carried out causing minimal disruption. Recognition of our efforts to deliver our works with minimal disruption was provided by the Considerate Constructors Scheme and also The Crown Estate.
